FAITH FOUNDED ON FACTS

2PETER 1: 12-21

In this passage the Apostle Peter addresses the subject of Truth – what it is and what it is not.

Simply stated, the Truth is God’s revelation through His Word – the Scriptures.

1. PASTORAL CONCERN (v 12-15)

Peter is writing this because of his PENDING DEATH

He wants to: REMIND us of the TRUTH (v12)

REFRESH our MEMORY (v13)

REMEMBER the Scriptures. (v15)

2. PERSONAL TESTIMONY (v 16-18)

a. He reminds his readers that HE HIMSELF was present at the TRANSFIGURATION. And also JAMES and JOHN were there as well.

b. The story of Jesus is not MYTH or LEGEND.
It is based on HISTORICAL FACTS.

c. The Apostles were witnesses to these things and were prepared to DIE for these TRUTHS.

3. PROPHETIC REVELATION (v19-21)

a. The Authoritative Word (v19)

Peter says “ GOD’s WORD the SCRIPTURES are all we need to believe.

The NEW is in the OLD concealed. The OLD is in the NEW revealed.

b. The Inspired Word (v20-21)

God SUPERINTENDED what was written.

APPLICATION:

1. We must NOT come to judge the Word of God, but allow the Word of God to JUDGE us

2. Be SURE of your SOURCE

3. OBEY the Word.

KEY VERSE: 2 PETER 1: 20 21.(NIV)

“Above all, you must understand that no prophecy of Scripture came about by the prophet’s own interpretation. For prophecy never had its origin in the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.”
