Sermon Notes:
1. A narrative tells a story.
2. Understanding the historical narrative of Scripture is critical to understanding the mission of Jesus for our lives.
3. We must first interpret the historical narratives of Scripture in the story of the big picture of what God is doing in human history.
4. We must second interpret the historical narrative of Scripture as the story of God’s people with all their flaws and faults.
5. We must lastly interpret the historical narratives of Scripture as the story of individual people for the purpose of encouragement.
6. People after God’s heart understand God’s narrative in the world and choose to join Him in following it for their lives.
Follow-up Questions from Sunday:
Quick Review:
Looking back at your notes from this week’s teaching, was there anything you heard for the first time or that caught your attention, challenged, or confused you?
Digging Deeper:
1. What do you think are some of the biggest questions in life that the historical narratives of the Bible answer?
2. What have been some of your biggest questions in life that Scripture has answered for you?
3. On Sunday, Pastor Frank told us that it is important to interpret the historical narratives of Scripture with an understanding of the big picture of what God is doing in the world. Why do you think this is important? What do you think could be some of the dangers if we don’t do this?
4. Read 1 Samuel 17 as a group. If someone was to tell you that the most important lesson of David and Goliath is that the little guy/the underdog can win, or that God can use little people too. How would you respond to them?
5. Read 1 Samuel 13:13-14; Acts 13:22; 2 Chronicles 16:9. What do you think are the qualities of a person who has a heart after God? Why do you think God seeks these people out?
6. The historical narratives of the Scriptures tell God’s story of what He has done, is doing, and will do in human history. How has your story been interwoven into God’s big story of what He is doing in the world?
