Sermon Notes:
1. Series recap: Church in Thessalonica was a church that was living in the tension of:
a. Being countercultural, turning away from idols and destructive behavior.
b. Love for others, amidst persecution and suffering.
c. Hope for the future, despite great loss and fear.

As Paul ends his letter in 1 Thessalonians, he encourages the church to:
2. Rejoice always. (v. 16)
3. Pray without ceasing. (v. 17)
4. Give Thanks in all circumstances (v. 18)

Paul also encourages the church to “not quench the Spirit”
5. As follower of Jesus we need to “kindle/fan into flame” God’s work in and around our lives through the promised help of the Holy Spirit.
6. We also need to cherish the ways the Holy Spirit works in us and around us, and to test everything to make sure it aligns to truth and Scripture.

Follow-up Questions from Sunday:

Quick Review:
Looking back at your notes from this week’s teaching, was there anything you heard for the first time or that caught your attention, challenged, or confused you?

Digging Deeper:
1. Where do you resonate with some of the struggles of the church of Thessalonica? Have you felt any of fears or tensions they have been dealing with as a countercultural church community?
2. How can you live out Paul’s encouragement to rejoice always, pray without ceasing and to give thanks in all circumstances? Why is this such a hard command to follow all the time?
3. How can you be more aware of the Holy Spirit’s work in your life? What are some ways you can help “kindle/fan into flame” God’s work in and around your life?

Taking it Home:
Spend some time this week rejoicing, praying, and giving thanks to God for what He has been doing in your life. In your quiet times with the Lord ask how you can actively participate in the great work He is doing in and around your life.
