Message Title: I AM

Series: Journey Through the Gospel of John

Key verses: John 8:48-59

Sermon Notes:

1. John 8 records an argument over who Jesus is.
2. In John chapters 5-8, people don’t struggle with what Jesus is doing, but they are having a problem with what He is saying about His identity.
3. In John 8, Jesus identifies Himself as God.
4. Isaiah 9 and John 8 both teach that God was bringing divine Light to the world through a divine human being.
5. Jesus says in John 8 that if you know who He is and receive what He did for you, you will not die in your sin.
6. In John 8, Jesus teaches us that arguments about the truth of God are important.

Follow-up Questions from Sunday:

Getting to Know You: When was your last argument? Who was it with? Do you remember what it was about?

Quick Review: Looking back at your notes from this week’s teaching, was there anything you heard for the first time or that caught your attention, challenged, or confused you?

Digging Deeper:

When you read John 8, how would you describe what is happening overall in this chapter?

1. What would you say is the root cause of the disagreement the religious leaders have with Jesus?

2. Why do you think Jesus continues to address His relationship with the Father? What is the critical issue raised by Him in verses 23-25, 51?

3. Who does Jesus claim to be in verse 58 and how is His statement related to Exodus 3:13-14?

4. When you read Isaiah 9:1-2, & 6, we see the prophecy that God was bringing divine light into the world through a divine being. What does John 8:12 and verse 58 reveal about Jesus?

5. What does Jesus teach us about arguments from John 8? (An argument is one or more premises, statements, or propositions—directed towards arriving at a logical conclusion demonstrating the truth or error of a claim. It can lead to heated disagreements or verbal disputes between two or more people.)

Taking it Home: Pray for God to give you the wisdom and discernment to know when to talk about Jesus to others without fear.
