6 things to remember this election as followers of Jesus.
1. No matter who wins, Jesus remains King. (1 Tim 6:15-16)
2. Voting in this country is not just a privilege but a responsibility.
3. As a follower of Jesus be informed, be prayerful, vote your conscience.
4. Be civil. (Mt 5:9)
5. Pray for those running. (1 Tim 2:1-4)
6. Love God. love people. (Mk 12:31-32)
Small Group Questions
Week 1In God We Trust
Icebreaker: Do you have a voting story? Share the best or worst experiences you’ve ever had in getting to the polls.
1. Read Psalm 118:8-9. Share a time when you trusted in people/politicians instead of God, and got let down. Was there ever a time in your life when you felt like God let you down? Did your feelings about that change over time?
2. How long have you lived in the United States? What are some things you like more about America compared to other countries you have visited or lived in?
3. Were you surprised to hear about the Christian beliefs of our founding fathers? If so, why? How do you think these people would feel about the state of our country today?
4. Abraham Lincoln stated that his concern was not whether God was on his side, but rather if he stood on God’s side. God has a stand on the issues of our day. How do we as followers of Jesus figure out what His stand is? What has God used to help you in this journey?
5. Read Daniel 2:21; Zechariah 14:9. How does knowing that God will one day be king over all the earth help us keep perspective on the coming and going of earthly rulers?
6. Read Matt 5:16; 1 Pet. 2:9-12. Why do we, as followers of Christ, need to be civil and obedient? Is there a limit to this obedience?
7. Read Phil 3:20; Heb 11:13-16. We are visitors in this world but our citizenship is in heaven. How does a citizen act when visiting a foreign country? What kind of citizens of the United States should we be, in light of this?
8. Read Rev. 21:1-5. God’s end game is revealed to us so that we would trust in the victory that He has planned for this broken world. How can God be a source of strength to help you persevere as you wait for the day when His reign over this world is absolute?
