Peter: The Man and His calling
As we study the life of Peter we find out that he is an ordinary man:
1. Peter was married. (Lk 4:38)
2. Peter worked for a living.
3. Peter had some form of financial success.
4. Peter struggled with pride. (Jn 13:6)
5. Peter struggled with a foul mouth. (Mt 26:74)
6. Peter was the oldest of the twelve Apostles. (Mt 17:24-27)
Even though Peter was an ordinary man, he had an extraordinary calling on his life. God used him to open the Church Age to mankind.
Peter’s calling teaches us that:
1. Calling is over career!
2. Business success is surrendered to following Jesus!
3. As Christians our calling isn’t to protect the truth but to proclaim it. “The Gates of hell won’t prevail.”
4. Our calling is to be offensive not defensive.
Key verse: Matthew 16:17-19(NIV)
17 Jesus replied, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by flesh and blood, but by my Father in heaven. 18 And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it. 19 I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.”
Question to ponder in your growth groups this week:
When was the first time that you really began to grasp that God had something more for your life (a calling for your life to follow Jesus)?
