Peter’s Spiritual Journey
In the Gospels, we learn of the story and the progression of when Peter first met, came to know, and one day decided to follow Jesus.
His spiritual journey looks something like this:
1. Scripture says Peter is not a disciple of John, but his little brother is.
2. Scripture says that Peter was at the Jordan River at the time when his little brother is moving from being a disciple of John the Baptist to a disciple of Jesus.
Why was Peter at the Jordan River with John the Baptist? Perhaps he was…
Curious of John’s ministry? What is happening? All Judea and Jerusalem went out to him.
Wanting to check in on his little brother?
Wanting to talk Andrew out of this “nonsense” of following prophets and to come back to the family fishing business?
Scripture does tell us that….
1. Peter meets Jesus for the first time at the Jordan River.
2. Peter is converted and first follows Jesus on the Sea of Galilee.
Key verse:
Luke 5:8-11, New International Version (NIV)
8 When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at Jesus’ knees and said, “Go away from me, Lord; I am a sinful man!” 9 For he and all his companions were astonished at the catch of fish they had taken, 10 and so were James and John, the sons of Zebedee, Simon’s partners.
Then Jesus said to Simon, “Don’t be afraid; from now on you will fish for people.” 11 So they pulled their boats up on shore, left everything and followed him.
Question to ponder in your Growth Groups this week:
When was the first time you came to realize that Jesus was more than you originally thought?
