Stirring in God’s Spoken Word
In Second Peter chapter three, Peter ends his letter encouraging the believers to grow in the knowledge of God and trust Him through hard times.
1. His main point in this letter is the importance of the knowledge of God/Christ.
2. The purpose of Peter’s letters is to stimulate/stir believers to wholesome/true thinking.
In Second Peter chapter three:
3. Peter is saying that God is not only the Creator, but that He has the power to bring judgment and even destroy that which He has created.
4. By His Word, He can create and by His Word he can destroy!
Why does God wait two thousand years and counting for His return?
5. God waits to offer us salvation.
Key verse:
2 Peter 3:5-9New International Version (NIV)
5 But they deliberately forget that long ago by God’s word the heavens came into being and the earth was formed out of water and by water. 6 By these waters also the world of that time was deluged and destroyed. 7 By the same word the present heavens and earth are reserved for fire, being kept for the day of judgment and destruction of the ungodly.
8 But do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day. 9 The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.
Some Questions to ponder in your growth groups this week:
1. What was something you learned or what particularly stood out to you from the sermon on Sunday?
2. Can you remember a time in your life when someone promised you something and it didn’t happen? How did that affect you? Do you think God will ever do this to you with His promises? Why or why not?
3. If you were in charge of creating, destroying, and redeeming the world, which of these would you take more time doing and why?
4. After studying 2 Peter Chapter 3, how would you describe the heart of God as he speaks to our world today?
5. How should the teaching from Sunday stimulate the way we live our lives today?
