We are beginning a new series on the I AM statements of Jesus in the Gospel of John. Jesus reveals who He is so that we will trust Him completely as we travel the journey of life.
Verses used: Exodus 3:14, John 11:1-44.
Key verse: John 11:25-26.
Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in me will never die. Do you believe this?”
Sermon Notes:
1. He is sovereign over the uncertainties of life
2. He is life for those who know Him and believe Him
3. He is present and compassionate in our grief and disappointment
4. He is powerful and His promises are sure
Some questions to consider this week:
1. What is one thing that stands out to you from the message on Sunday?
2. What is the difference between knowing about someone and knowing them personally? What can you learn about someone by knowing them personally that you cannot learn simply by knowing things about them?
3. Jesus says that the circumstances surrounding Lazarus’s death were “for God’s glory so that God’s Son may be glorified through it” (John 11:4). Has there been a time in your life where you experienced difficulties or loss but God revealed His power in the middle of it?
4. Have you ever gone on a trip (or a drive or a hike) where you were worried about your safety? What was missing that would have made you feel like it was under control? How does God bring that kind of security in your life?
5. Jesus said “whoever lives by believing in me will never die” (John 11:26). When did this life that He describes start for you? How does knowing that it will never end change your perspective on things?
6. Has there been a time when God was present with you through something that was difficult, and you could feel His love and understanding of your situation?
7. How can we be “stirring in” the sermon’s verses into our lives this week?
