The Book of Philippians:
Who Are We Courageous For?
The book of Philippians, an amazing book found in the New Testament, is filled with characters that possess courageous faith for God. In this letter, the Apostle Paul is in prison for telling people about Jesus. As his life hangs in the balance, he, in chapter two, describes the One that he is in prison for….Jesus.
Who is Jesus?
1. He is GOD.
2. He emptied himself of His divine attributes/superpowers when He became a man.
How did Jesus do all the miracles?
3. God the Father did the miracles through Him! (Jn 14:10-11).
As a man in human flesh, Jesus experienced all the limitations of a man.
4. He got tired. (Jn 4:6)
5. He got hungry. (Mt 21:18)
6. He got sleepy. (Mt 8:23-24)
7. He experienced human physical development. (Lk 2:51-52)
Who did Jesus leave heaven for?
Who did Jesus empty Himself for?
Who did Jesus humble Himself for on the cross?
Who did He die on the cross for?
YOU!
This is the One we are courageous for!!
Key verse:
Philippians 2:5-8New American Standard Bible (NASB)
Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus, who, although He existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond-servant, and being made in the likeness of men. Being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.
*A question to ponder in your growth group this week:
When we see the sacrifice that Jesus made for us–on our behalf, how should that make us feel? How does it make you feel?
