Title of Message: Who Is The Holy Ghost?

This morning, we will be starting a new series called Ghost Stories as we look to the supernatural and the third person of the trinity. Is the Holy Ghost an “it” or a He?

Key verses:
John 14:15-17, John 14:26, John 15:26, John 16:7-15,
John 14:15-17
“If you love Me, you will keep My commandments. I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may be with you forever; that is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it does not see Him or know Him, but you know Him because He abides with you and will be in you.
John 14:26
“But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you.
John 15:26
“When the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, that is the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father, He will bear witness of Me.
John 16:7-15
“But I tell you the truth, it is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper shall not come to you; but if I go, I will send Him to you. “And He, when He comes, will convict the world concerning sin, and righteousness, and judgment; concerning sin, because they do not believe in Me; and concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father, and you no longer behold Me; and concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world has been judged. “I have many more things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. “But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come.” He shall glorify Me; for He shall take of Mine, and shall disclose it to you. “All things that the Father has are Mine; therefore I said, that He takes of Mine, and will disclose it to you.
SERMON NOTES:
1. The Holy Spirit is not an IT but a HE.
2. 20 times Jesus calls Him a PERSON.
3. The Holy Ghost is the third PERSON of the trinity.
4. The Holy Spirit is associated with POWER!
The Power of the Holy Spirit was active in the Old Testament in:
5. CREATION of the universe. (Gen 1:2)
6. FALLING upon people to do miraculous things. (Judges 14:6)
7. INSPIRATION of the written Scripture. (2 Pet 1:21)
SOME QUESTIONS FOR YOUR GROUP THIS WEEK:
1. What was something you learned or what stood out to you from the sermon on Sunday?
2. What has been your journey in trying to understand the person and the nature of the Holy Spirit?
3. When we think of the supernatural, we often conger up images of darkness rather than the light of the Holy Ghost. Do you have any “ghost stories” in your life where you felt you encountered darkness?
4. Regarding Halloween, how do you feel about its influence of the spirit of darkness?
5. What are your “Holy Ghost” stories?
6. What is the relationship of the Father, Jesus and the Holy Spirit to the believer? To each other?
7. John 16:8-11 names the various roles of the Holy Spirit. How would you paraphrase the goals of the Spirit’s work?
8. How can we be “stirring in” these verses into our lives this week?
